Equipment Relocation, AEP - Dolet Hills Lignite Company, DeSoto Parish
Providence assisted American Electric Power’s (AEP) Dolet Hills Lignite Company, in DeSoto Parish, with a two-phase project for the expansion of the mining area on the west side of Louisiana Highway 175. The first phase of the project included the permitting, design, bid management, traffic control, and oversight for the construction of an at-grade crossing at the intersection of an internal coal haul road and LA Hwy 175 that can handle 120-ton coal haul trucks crossing the highway. Providence worked with Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LA DOTD) officials to ensure that all permitting associated with the road crossing was in place prior to construction. Temporary traffic control included construction of a detour road for construction. Permanent traffic control included the installation of flashing light mechanisms that warn oncoming traffic of approaching coal haul trucks. The project also required utility coordination and relocations of a water line and fiber optic lines. The second phase of the project included the relocation (from the east side of LA Hwy 175 to the west side) of AEP’s dragline that is approximately 110 ft. by 150 ft. and weighs approximately seven million pounds. The Providence team was responsible for the geotechnical investigation, permitting, design, bid management, and construction oversight for the construction of a ramp over LA Hwy 175 for the crossing of the dragline.
